I cannot help it. while living in downtown Los Angeles in the middle of the last decade, I was confounded by the Yin and Yang of the area, which persists to this day. that is, the area has undergone many changes. most notably is that Thursday night at 11pm, walking around parts of downtown, looks like it used to be 10 years ago at 6.30pm on any weekday. 8 years ago was the time that the first supermarket came back to the area, and now there is much construction and a Whole Foods is in the works. the dichotomy of west-downtown (with the high-rises) and the rest of the downtown area with wonderful vintage architecture is diminishing as well. yet, the Yin and Yang remains. the lamp in this parking lot, has been updated to something modern, from the time years ago, but it is a symbol of the urban renewal: under the new façade, much of the gritty part of downtown LA remains. sad will be the time when/if the entire patina of decay is removed from downtown LA. will it become a shell of something new, or will it fulfill its Blade Runner future?
